Know your current state
Your current title, years in role, last promotion date, and what your "day-to-day" actually looks like. Specifics — not generalities.

Articulate where you want to be
In 12 months — what title, what kind of work, what compensation bracket? It's okay if it's a range. What's not okay is "not sure."

Identify what's genuinely blocking you
Is it visibility? Interview performance? Positioning? A plateau you can't diagnose? If you knew, you'd have fixed it — so an honest "I don't know" is also a valid answer.
