Give it your full attention — phones aside, distractions down. The next 12 mins may become the most important 12 minutes of your career
Hi, let's first cover the point that why should you be spending next fifteen-twenty minutes of your life watching this video. So, I'll show you something. This is my form sixteen from twenty seventeen. As you can see, my income at that point of time was around twenty two point eight lux, and I had around thirteen years of experience by then. Now look at this. This is my form sixteen from twenty twenty two. My income at that point of time was one crore fourteen lakhs. And this is not even a yearly income. This is income for around eight months. So if you wanna know how I achieved that kind of drastic transformation in around five years time, then please watch on. But in case you are not interested, so sorry for wasting your time, and I wish you all the very best. My name is Shekhar Sakia. I'm an ex Amazonian and an industry leader with over two decades of experience. And I'm also founder of Career Accelerators where I mentor senior IT professionals to get some breakthrough career transformation in a very short span of time. In the next twenty odd minutes, I'll be sharing with you certain strategies that helped me become a vice president of engineering from an associate development manager position in six months flat. It helped me get a ninety four point two four percent salary hike with just one job change and eventually land a main manager job with a salary of one crore plus. In fact, these are the same strategies that helped my mentees get traumatic career transformations. Here is Roshni who transitioned from a QA lead position at Cognizant to a QA manager position at Amazon in around three months' time after spending eleven years in her last job. Sameer, who got more than hundred percent hike and two offer letters from companies like Autodesk and SINETI in less than two months. Yogesh who joined ACC as a vice president of service delivery after spending many, many years at a middle management level. There are many more stories like that which you can check-in our website or in the YouTube channel. But you didn't click on this link to hear other success stories. You came here to build your own. So let's not waste any time and directly come to the point. Start by first searching the average salary of an IT manager in India. Depending on which sources you rely on, the range lies somewhat around twenty to forty five lux, plus minus five lux either way. And I know that it is true based on my interaction with hundreds of middle management IT professionals and my personal experience of drawing something very similar just a couple of years back. And today, you'll learn how you too can achieve some dramatic transformations of your own. But first, a little backstory. This is an overview of my entire IT career, and I divide it into two distinct phases. Pre transformation, which was mostly normal with occasional ups and downs and post transformation, which was mostly extraordinary. As you can see, I started my career back in two thousand four from a company called Quark. One year there and after a mass layoff that kinda wiped off my entire department, I joined GlobalLogic. I spent around six and a half years in GlobalLogic, had a rapid growth over there. But then I suddenly realized that though the role was growing, money was not growing at the same pace. And I started to look out. It seems funny, but at that point of time, I just had one objective, to get more than one luck a month. And in twenty ten December, I joined Pitney Bowes because they were meeting that practitioner. Years were good. I got promoted to an associate development manager position in I think one and two years time. And I thought that the rapid growth of GlobalLogic will repeat here. Unfortunately, I was very very wrong. Years passed, and I was still the associate development manager. Every year, it seemed like the promotion was just around the corner. All I had to do was work a bit harder, take some extra initiatives, and it will be mine. But no matter what I did, how hard I tried, nothing changed on the ground. After five years in the same role, I was almost reaching my breaking point. And when in two thousand seventeen, it became clear that I'll not be getting the promotion that year as well, I knew that I had to do something very different from what I have been doing so far. For the very first time in my life, I analyzed my career from an outsider perspective and discovered certain limiting beliefs which were holding me back. The moment I broke those beliefs, my transformation started. Today, I'm sharing this story with you because maybe maybe you are also being held down by similar limiting beliefs. And if you know how to break them, you will get what you truly deserve. Here is the first limiting belief I discovered. I believe that success required degrees and certificates. I knew I was not successful, but I didn't know what I needed to do to become successful. So like everyone else, I was looking for some secret formulas which probably will be given by certain degrees and courses that I do. Like everyone else, I had done PMP, I had done a CSPO certificate, I even did a short leadership course at ISP. I had fun learning the new concepts, but if I am honest, none of them had any direct impact on my life and my career. So I started studying other successful people around me and understood that skill and experience actually are much more valuable than just empty certificates and degrees. So I started by reading books and blogs by highly successful people and started learning different topics like communication psychology and negotiations and started applying them in real life. A few books, if you're interested, limitless by Jim Kwik, how to influence and influence people by Dale Carnegie, a all time classic, And never split the difference by Chris Voss if you want to learn negotiations. I also started investing heavily on personal development. A few noteworthy courses that I went through, Lifebook by Jim and Missy Butcher and almost all the programs from Landmark Foundation. The result was a new me was not a victim of the circumstances, but a solver of problems. Second limiting belief, talkers don't do. Doers don't talk. I was good at what I did, but not very good at selling what I have done. This is because I had a belief that only liar, cheat, and psych offense talk about their own achievements. In fact, I remember a time when in an annual appraisal document, I wrote just three words. I did well. I knew that I was paying a heavy price for this belief. So I asked myself a simple question, is it possible to sell myself honestly but still have an impact? The answer was an unequivocal yes. I started to learn how to build effective communication, how to use data and storytelling to present my case, how to shift the focus of the communication from my side to the listener's side so that I can leave an impact on that person. And soon I started seeing a drastic difference in how people perceive me from how they used to perceive me in the past. New belief, it is okay to sell yourself as long as you are doing that honestly and ethically. Old belief number three, just work hard and success will be yours. I think almost all of us are born with this belief and that is why when we don't succeed, we just do what we have been always doing, work even harder and harder until you cannot work any harder. I understood the truth that hard work is a necessary but not sufficient condition for success. And from this, I formed the new belief that success requires hard work, which is strategy. This is the most crucial part because if you don't get it right, you'll you can end up in a completely wrong place. Don't worry. I'll not leave you with this, but share with you a step by step process that I executed to get my results. Step one, benchmarking myself. Like most people, I too felt that I deserve much more than what I was getting. Well, I also believe that I was really good at what I do, and probably I was when compared to the kind of companies that I've worked with so far. But I had no idea how good I was when compared against the best in the industry. Luckily, in the around same time, I got an interview call from Amazon for a software development manager position. And though I felt that I did really well in that interview, I could not clear the interview. The old me would have found excuses and reasons for not clearing the interview. The new me accepted the failure wholeheartedly and tried to understand the reason for that. I started by doing a SWOT analysis of myself in five key areas. People management, project management, customer obsession, innovation and technical proficiency. Though I was good in almost all those areas, I still had one vital weakness. I lacked diversity in my experience as a manager. It was more evident because most of my managerial experience was in Pitney Bowes and where for better part of seven years, I was managing just one single product. As a result, most of my interview answers had a similar ring to that. And that may have created a doubt in the interviewers mind whether I would be able to cope up when the situation changes. This discovery kicked off a process of transformation, which resulted in the success three years later when I joined Amazon as a software development manager one level higher than the previous role. For your SWOT analysis, you can use the template I've given here. You can do that yourself or take the help of a mentor who can give an objective assessment free from any biases. My recommendation will be to go for the second option. Once you have a clear idea of your capabilities, move to the next step. That is defining a clear measurable goal which is aligned to your strength and not towards your weaknesses. I call it a W four goal. That is what kind of role in what kind of company drawing what salary you should be targeting in what time, the four w's. When I started working on my w four goal, I realized that the role was the most important thing for me at that point of time. In order to mitigate for a weakness of lack of diversity, I needed to go for a much higher role that'll give me an opportunity to solve many different problems in one go. Based on my experience at that point of time, I knew that only a smaller company probably will be giving me that kind of role. So for what kind of role, I was picking senior management. For what kind of company, I was picking a smaller organization which probably will be a start up. Salary was not an objective for me as long as the next company at least matches my current salary. As for time, I gave myself six months which I felt was a very reasonable time frame and thus I had my W four goal. The last step in this process is to create a plan with dates and milestones in there. You can use different techniques over there. You can use a technique called working backwards plan where you start from the destination that is your next offer and work backwards from that point onwards. Along with a plan, you also have to define mechanisms to execute the plan. That means dedicating fixed hours to work on your career, which is different from your job and being consistent with that. Although I got my first breakthrough roughly in five months of time when I joined Barsteret System as a vice president engineering managing their global engineering team, I consider that as the first step towards my transformation, which culminated in twenty twenty two when I left Amazon to start my own startup carrier accelerators, which was always my dream. It took me five years to reach at the destination because I was doing this journey unguided and made my fair share of mistakes. Hopefully, if you apply these principles, you can do this journey in a shorter time frame. Now you have two options in front of you. First, apply these principles and execute the journey on your own. If that is the case, I wish you all the very best. And in fact, I'll do one better. I'll share with you my ebook where I have shared a lot of strategies which you can apply to execute this journey on your own. Just leave us a feedback in our Facebook page and I'll share with you the instructions on how you can download that book for free. Option two. If you're someone who is in a hurry and who wants to get trusted transformation in next couple of months and not wait for a couple of years and who's ready to work hard when shown a way, then maybe I can help.
